"Doing my bit for the environment"

That's the claim I've made of my kegerator. Considering a 15.5 US gallon half barrel (1984 ounces) and standard US twelve ounce bottles...
  • One keg or 165 individual bottles? The environmental cost to produce/recycle the containers is significantly less.
  • 165 bottles would be packaged in seven paperboard cases or 28 six packs. Fewer trees taken down, less energy expended to produce the paper, and less paperboard off to the recycle man.
  • The barrel is simply returned to the point of purchase, returned to the brewer, cleaned, and reused.
  • Fewer trips to the beverage sales point are required (reducing anywhere between seven and 28 trips to one).
    • Saves gas!
    • Less pollution
My newfound environmentalism does have one drawback, though. I really do like a variety of beverages, and this does marry a man to one brew for a period of time. It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make, though.

My wife's just not buying the argument. Go figure.

Fair play update: I must be fair to my wife and admit that the purchase of the kegerator was made by her as a gift to me... The above environmentally friendly comments were trying to make her feel better about the fact afterward.
